Korg Poly 800 makes Korg a Dominant Synth Maker
The 1980s was about the time I really started getting interested in synthesizers. The competition in synths and sound technology really started heating up in the early to mid 1980s. Roland was considered king for a while with their famous Juno Synth. I remember reading about the Korg Poly 800 when it came out and being hugely impressed with the fact it had 8-Voice polyphony. Yes, you can play 8 voices at the same time! Other huge features of the Korg Poly-800 are its 50 editable parameters and 64 memory patches. Those are huge numbers for the day. Also, the oscillators of the Poly 800 can be doubled up for creating 4 fat voices of polyphony instead of 8. This is sort of a precursor to the layered sounds more modern synths started using in the 1990s.
Korg improved on its Poly-800 with the addition of the MKII version in 1984. The Poly-800 MKII added digital delay effects and a huge 256-step polyphonic sequencer in its EX-800 Rackmount Version.
The Korg Poly 800, in my opinion, is what put Korg on the map of professional synth enthusiasts. When guys like Geoff Downs, Orbital and Jim Tenor started playing it, the Korg was a synth company that was taken as seriously as Roland. Since the introduction of the Poly-800, I became a Korg synth fan, though it wasn’t until the 1990s that I bought my first Korg, the X3, a 32-note polyphonic digital synth with sounds that still sound good, today! 1993 was only 9 years later, but both of these Korgs are still great instruments today.. While the X3 is not exactly considered vintage, the Poly-800 certainly is. Fortunately, you can still find some well conditioned poly-800s being sold on the auction page above.
