The Prophet VS Synth Claim to Fame
The Prophet VS Synth has an interesting history behind its rise to vintage fame. Invented in 1986 by Sequential Circuits, the Prophet VS was in fact the first synthesizer to use vector synthesis combined with digital wave forms. Other Vector Synthesizers took off from the invention of the Prophet VS, even after Sequential Circuits had gone out of business; such as the Korg Wave Station and the Yamaha SY22. These are all good synths too and represent an interesting era in synth technology; being among the first generation of analog/digital vector synths. The Prophet VS has 8-Note polyphony (pretty good for those days) and 32 oscillators. The Prophet VS comes equipped with an impressive ROM/RAM program capacity for its day: 128, 12-Bit Waveforms. 96 of those waveforms are ROM-based and the remaing 32 are in user RAM. The largest wave is 128 – 12-Bit long! An analog chorus helps it maintain its phat vintage sounds. The Prophet VS has 4 Oscillators which are mixed by use of a loopable Vector Envelope. All Envelopes can be looped. There is some advanced synthesis capabilities such as semi-matrix modulation and VCA Panning. The Prophet VS accepts a MIDI Sample Dump Standard – Pretty important feature back when before USB computers and MIDI was way to connect music and computers. Another, cool feature on the VS is the Joystick which provides a very intuitive way to control the mix and volume of the four different oscillators. Prophet VS makes a good case for the varying kinds of subtle to radical sound changes that can be made with use of a joystick and vector synthesis.
